Nursery provision – Our commitment to improving outcomes for children

Early Years Foundation Stage:

Our provision is guided by the Early Years Foundation framework. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guides our curriculum. We meticulously plan activities for both indoors and outdoors, across Prime and Specific areas of the Early Years Foundations Stage Framework (EYFS, 2014).

Play is at the centre of everything we do as very young children learn best through play. By providing excellent play experiences we help our children develop communication skills, explore their feelings whilst also developing mathematical language and fine and gross motor skills. Play gives children a chance to make friends, choose activities and resources independently and use their imagination.

Our provision has an extensive outdoor play area which is used as a valuable learning space and extension to our classroom. We are a Natural Thinkers accredited setting.


In practice we use simple observations. We record each child's unique abilities, their interests, what resources they like to use and play with and how they engage with others in setting.

Regular observations are part of our daily routine. A systemic approach to observations provides reliable information about the children’s abilities and support the practitioners to plan individual children’s next steps in their learning.

Prime Areas:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development – during their time in early years children will develop social skills such as respect for others, understanding of their own and others feelings and gain self-confidence, self-awareness and develop an awareness of appropriate behaviour. Overall children will learn of the importance of emotional well-being, self-confidence and self-awareness.

Physical Development – we provide opportunities for children to be physically active, develop co-ordination and control. Drawing, using scissors, dance, and outdoor play and games are just some of the planned activities that support children to develop physical skills. Children's understanding about the importance of a healthy lifestyle is further enhanced during snack and lunch times where children are encouraged to  make healthy food choices and engage in social interactions.

Communication and Language – children express themselves both verbally or non-verbally. Our children have numerous opportunities to develop their speech whether it be through taking turns in conversation or learning the importance of good listening. Our practitioners are highly trained in Speech and Language development programmes including 'Every Lambeth Child a Talker' (ELCAT), Interactive Circle Times (ICT) and Adult Child Interaction (ACI). Our weekly ELCAT and talking table’s activities support children to develop language and understanding skills.

Specific Areas:

Literacy – We follow the government recommended 'Letters and Sounds' program to teach children phonics. In early years children are encouraged to begin using drawing and mark-making to develop their communication skills and circle time and our home learning programme supports children to develop an interest in reading storytime and books.

Mathematics - children will learn about numbers: to count, recognise numbers, sort, order and match. They will learn to find patterns, explore measures, capacity, space, shape, opposites.

Understanding the World – this area of development helps children to look at the world around them. For example to show interest in people's lives, people who help them, the natural environment, growing things or how to operate simple equipment.

Expressive and Creative Arts – children will participate in music, dance, role-play and imaginative play activities. They will have an opportunity to explore a variety of media and materials. Children will have access to regular music and singing sessions throughout the week.


Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND):

Our nursery is committed to supporting children with SEND.  We have practitioners who are experienced in working with children with SEND. We are an enhanced setting, which means we guarantee a number of places for children with SEND who are referred to us by Disability Team Around the Child (DTAC). As we are an enhanced setting we also benefits from additional access to specialist training and advice from a range of professionals.

Our Early Years’ SENCO co-ordinates the support and services for children with SEND in our nursery and works closely with practitioners and parents to ensure their needs are met.
